    Luka Lyrics

    by Suzanne Vega

    My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
    I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
    I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
    Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
    You just don't argue anymore
    You just don't argue anymore
    You just don't argue anymore

    Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
    With nothing broken, nothing thrown
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

How/Why does this song speak to you?
    OR
You can be literal - what does it actually mean
(If you've heard explanations by the singer
/songwriter in an interview or otherwise -
or if you wrote it or know who did)?

THIS SONG SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE IT IS AN EXPERIENCE
THAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH ON MORE THAN ONE
ACCOUNT AND NEVER WISH TO GO THROUGH AGAIN!!

    THIS WAS OBTAINED FROM THE
    SUZANNE VEGA WEBSITE

    Who is Luka?

The song Luka is written from the point-of-view of an abused
child and tells his story in a subtle and psychologically
realistic way, only hinting at the horrible secret of his
life. Some people have also read it to be a song about an
abused woman, and although this was not what Suzanne
though of when she wrote the song, it is certainly also a
    valid interpretation.
    index

The name "Luka" is indeed taken from a real person with that
name, whose outer character Suzanne borrowed. There is,
however, no reason to believe that Luka was an abused child
in real life. This is what Suzanne said in a Swedish
television special recorded 3 November 1987:

"A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in
from of my building, and there was one of them, whose name
was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other
children. I always remembered his name, and I always
remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but
he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would
see playing. And his character is what I based the song
Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child --
I real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different"

AS SHE SAYS, SHE DIDNT ORIGINALLY WRITE IT
ABOUT AN ABUSED WOMAN, BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE
RELATE IT TO BEING ABOUT THAT. BEING INVOLVED
IN SEVERAL ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS, I CAN SO
RELATED TO THE WORDS OF THAT SONG...
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
I REMEMBER BEING ABUSED ONLY TO BE HIT
HARDER IF I MADE ANY NOISE.......
I try not to talk too loud
    Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO BLAME YOURSELF,
YOU SAID THE WRONG THING, DID THE
WRONG THING, LOOKED THE WRONG WAY....
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
    You just don't argue anymore
ONCE YOU START CRYING IT PISSES
THEM OFF AND THEY START HITTING
HARDER IN ORDER TO SHUT YOU UP. YOU
EVENTUALLY GET TO THE POINT OF TAKING
IT AND NOT CRYING OR ARGUING SO THAT
HE WILL JUST STOP AND LEAVE YOU ALONE....
     THAT SONG HAS
ALWAYS BEEN A SONG THAT CAN BRING ME
TO TEARS JUST LISTENING TO IT.

  • Very sad indeed! My thoughts are with you. (((HUGS)))

  • Wonderful entry!  I was under the misguided notion that Luka was an abused woman, too!  Such a sad song!

  • RYC:  In Fact, they are actually better at digging themselves even deeper.......LMAO!

  • Dear Pogue,

Suzanne Vega is one of my all time favorite singer songwriters. I have Solitude Standing and about four or five other CDs. My favorite CD is "Days of an Open Hand'. I used to listen to that record nonstop back in the late 80s and I've got her music on my ipod these days. Fantastic choice.

  • That song always made me cry and now I will be crying for a different child...

  • Great post...brought back some nasty memorys...don't ask, not going there again...got away...that's what counts...great post...Smile

  • Wow- really disturbing but something I guess we all need to be aware of. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hey.... My name is LUKA...

  • Sorry to hear it. I know others who've been abused. My heart goes out to each and everyone. There is never a reason or excuse to raise one's hand against another... ever.

  • Whoah... I'm so sorry that this happened to you. Your choice of song, and the way you write about it is encouraging, though - very much so. Thank you posting such an insightful entry.

Grace & peace be with you,
    Steve

  • great post. That song was sad before I read the rest of your post. After reading the rest of your post, it was even sadder and meant a lot more. So I applaud your post. Hope all is well. Peace out and take care.

  • Sad song. Great post. Thanks for sharing!

  • Horribly sad.  I'm impressed that someone had the courage to write a song about such monstrousness.  And I'm sorry indeed that it had such personal relevance for you.  My favorite song is "Bridge Over Troubled Water," (which I didn't use as the subject for my blog in this series).  I might well have done.

  • thank you for sharing such meaningful lyrics and personal experiences ... great entry

  • Thanks for Guessing What!

  • Just more proof that music is the window to the soul...I'm sorry that you endured that kind of pain....
