The police chief of Shady Cove, Ore., said he handcuffed a
third-grade girl at her school and escorted her home at
the request of her parents.
Shady Cove Police Chief Rick Mendenhall said the girl,
whose name and age were not released for privacy reasons,
was taken from school to her home for a talk with her
mother about theft, the Medford (Ore.) Mail Tribune
reported Monday.
"The parents are trying to instill responsibility and
show consequences," he said. "This was my first request
like this, but I would do it for any parent."
Mendenhall said the girl, who had been caught stealing on
two separate occasions, was handcuffed in her third-grade
classroom and driven home in a police car. He said the
"arrest" had been requested by the girl's parents and
no actual charges were filed. "If we can show people
consequences for their actions and keep them out of the
criminal justice system, I'm going to do it," Mendenhall
said.
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?
I BELIEVE A CHILD SHOULD BE TALKED TO THE FIRST
TIME AND WARNED, BUT THEN IF IT HAPPENS A SECOND TIME,
AND WARNING HAS BEEN GIVEN, ITS TIME TO GO TO JUVY.
I THINK IT IS STUPID TO GO TO SCHOOL AND
PRETEND TO BE LOCKING THE CHILD UP JUST
TO PROVE A POINT.......
IF THE CHILD IS GOING TO STEAL, EVEN AFTER BEING
WARNED, THEN LOCK THEM UP, THAT WILL
DEFINATELY PROVE A POINT.
AND FOR YOU WHO SAY IT IS NOT SAFE AT JUVY,
I SAY THEY SHOULD PUT SMALLER CHILDREN IN
A SAFER TYPE OF JUVY OF COURSE, NOT IN WITH
OLDER MEANER CHILDREN WHERE THEY CAN GET
HURT, OF COURSE THEIR SAFETY SHOULD BE
MOST IMPORTANT, BUT THEY SHOULD LOCK THEM
UP NONETHELESS, THEY WILL NOT LEARN OTHERWISE.
NOTICE....
THE TWO PICS ABOVE OF THE
TWO BOYS BEING ARRESTED....
THOSE CHILDREN WERE ARRESTED
FOR OF ALL OTHER THINGS
FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!
WHY SHOULD THE GIRL STEALING BE
TREATED WITH A MOCK ARREST,
THESE TWO BOYS DIDNT!!!
I WILL LEAVE YOU ALL WITH A FUNNY..

The argument would be that the boys were treated too harshly. Let's see what this does. If it doesn't work, then send her to juvie. Personally, I'd be sending the parents. Why aren't THEY disciplining their child.
This is a toughie - parents could be the real problem - could be the kid is a lot to handle. I would say there needs to be some real tough love somewhere, not sure this would be the best way to handle it!
I think it's a good lesson.
I don't know... I could never do that to my children...
Lets say for one moment this is a nice school and not in the hollers of the getto.... all those children have now seen that girl be escorted in handcuffs.... she will be forever labeled as a trouble maker and only trouble makers will allow her to hang around...
I think they made it worse for her... not better.
I believe there was a better way to handle this.... even if it was a walk through Juvy...

RYC: In the case of abuse...The bible doesnt say that it is grounds for divorce. I do know one woman whom that was happening to. She did leave her husband but did not divorce him. I really think that it would be something the the abused woman would have to work out herself with God. I will say this I would not believe that the abused woman if she did leave and divorce the man would have grounds to remarry. She would need to remain single or reconsile with her husband if he got help for his anger/abuse issues.
I think that is beyond proving a point. Crazy stuff
Happy Easter my friend
I think in the case of older children, juevy might work...but with younger....I think talking, then warning, then being confronted by police may be enough. My kids when they were small were raised to respect policeman but they also knew that police meant business and were there to keep us safe...I think mostly it depends on the kids....the freedom of speech thing....ridiculous.
It sounds like the parents were unable to enforce the ground rules at home. I am unsure how this is going to work. I mean, so the kid will avoid the police...but will the kid listen to her parents? Does not sound like it. That is just my 2 cents...
